You will never be first following footsteps of others!

In VikingGenetics we have been focusing on health traits since 1985, which is longer than anybody else in the world! We have always believed that a healthy cow is an economic cow for the farmer, a cow that is high producing, gets in calf, has easy calving’s, stays healthy and has a functional conformation.

In Scandinavia we are lucky because we have a registration system that is unique. All reports from the field such as veterinarians, hoof trimmers, technicians, classifiers etc. about the cows go into the same database.

This is unique, and makes our breeding values very accurate and precise! Daughter groups are also big, from 150-200 daughters, which give us breeding values with high reliability, also on the health traits!

NTM – Nordic Total Merit

In Scandinavia we use an index called NTM, which is a combined index of 13 different traits which all have an economic impact for the dairyfarmer. Today 50% of the weight in NTM is on health traits, 30 % on production and 20% on conformation. The 13 different traits in NTM are itself combined of many subindeces. NTM have an average of 0 and standard deviation is 10 units. Bulls with +20 and above in NTM and +120 and above in individual trait are 2 standard deviations better the average
